I just finished the book "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe. I have been struggling lately with starting books and losing intrest and going on to another one. That all stopped with this one.
The story follows a strong, powerful warrior in an African tribe and his inner struggles with himself, his family and his tribe. He overcame the lazy upbringing of his shameful father and became a husband to many wives and father to many children. He also gained power in his tribe and was later banished from the village and sent to his motherland. This is where the story line of the overtaking of the "white man" occurs and this is where the book really makes statment. The last pages really stopped me as I read them (which I guess I had to stop anyway because it was the end of the book.) The ending is somewhat foreseen but the last paragraph really speaks about most great lives in history...they are forgotten or hardly mentioned.
If you see this cover...pick it up.
